Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered (LGBT) people tend to have a much higher incidence of substance abuse and addiction than the heterosexual population. Many reasons abound for the higher rates, but some of them include the very high pressure and stress that comes from trying to live a normal life in a society that is homophobic and unaccepting. Negative messages, some very blatant and hurtful are everywhere. While all substances of abuse and addiction are present in the LGBT community, alcohol, cocaine and club drugs are big players. There’s no doubt the LGBT community is struggling with years of substance abuse and addition problems.  However, there are now treatment facilities geared to the unique needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people.

Treatment centers for LGBT individuals are complete free from the scourge of  homophobia in treatment. That allows LGBT people to seek care without any worry or fear of discrimination or disapproval. The treatment professionals at a LGBT facility are open, accepting, and caring. With the fear of homophobia out of the way, therapy for addiction can be delivered much more effectively, without the blinds of prejudice to fight through.

We know ongoing stress is a major psychological part of addiction. Some of those sources of stress include:

  • Hostile work environments
  • Difficulty in Obtaining Work due to the Stigma of being Gay
  • Guilt, Shame, and Family of Origin problems due to alternate sexuality and gender identity
  • Persistent threats of violence in some areas
  • Actual assault and injury due to being GLBT
  • Loneliness and Isolation
  • Depression

Rehab for LGBT people addresses these stress sources by:

  1. Teaching the individual how to respond to homophobia, discrimination, and prejudice.
  2. Educating the individual on health disclosure and coming out
  3. Family therapy when possible, and how to form better relationships with partners, family members, and member of the public
  4. Assisting LGBT in the process of developing a personal identity that fits who that individual really wants to be.
  5. Providing dual-diagnosis care, as mental illness does not discriminate between gay or straight and often occurs in people under intense chronic stress

LGBT rehab centers work with those issues that are universal to all LGBT people, plus addresses each client individually and works with their issues. All care is individualized, and the professionals at each center are trained and enthusiastic to serve to LGBT population. Being LGBT in our culture may mean a person is in a minority, but it absolutely does not mean they have to go through rehab alone!
