Many treatment programs exist that are oriented around purely psychological and behavioral models. These programs do not rely on any concept of a higher power, and are neither religious or spiritual in nature. Instead, they rely heavily on theory and facts about the brain and its mechanisms that control the reward, learning, and pleasure systems in the brain. They also look at the effect of the biochemistry of the brain and body and its role in addiction.

Perhaps more than any other therapy, non 12 Step treatment centers rely on individual therapy with a trained addiction specialist. It’s that one on one, highly personalized care that lets the therapist and client work together to establish the factors that aggravate a person’s stress until they turn to substance abuse. Non 12 Step programs see addiction as a destructive way to deal with chronic stress and anxiety. By teaching new and positive stress management skills, personal growth and positive develop will follow. By controlling stress and reducing its effects, the urge to use substances will go down as cravings lessen.

There are a number of different programs that use a non 12 Step model for recovery. One is Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART). SMART recovery uses a 4 point model that emphasizes:

  • Living in a Balanced Manner
  • Dealing with Urges and Cravings
  • Staying Motivated
  • Managing Behavior and Thought
  • Creating and supporting Self-Directed Change

These skills deal with reducing stress, conflict, and self-management. Skills taught in smart include stress management, systematic relaxation, mindful awareness, meditation, and conflict resolution. SMART also uses rehearsing; that is, a role play in which the client is exposed to a simulated situation that causes them stress, and allows them to de-escalate that situation without locking up or panicking.

Other therapies include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Rational-Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT). Both of these therapy types tend to take place in individual therapy. They recognize the important way our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about the world affect our actions. CBT and REBT help treat addiction by approaching addiction as another unhelpful behavior. Once better, more helpful behaviors are established, and the person with addiction problems will not engage in drug seeking any longer.

CBT and REBT do not at all deny that detoxification is necessary, and urge a person needing that care to seek it in an inpatient care center. Many care centers are oriented completely around CBT/REBT and offer inpatient detox, residential care, and the full range of outpatient therapies.

Here is a short listing of some of the Non-12 Step programs available:
