Prescription drug abuse is absolutely rampant in America today. The most commonly abused prescription drugs are painkillers, and of those the opioids are the number one painkiller abused. Regardless, prescription drugs of all sorts and classes are being used, with prescription drug abuse likely to soon overtake alcohol abuse as the number one class of drugs abused in the United States.

Prescription drugs are abused in two ways: people overtake the medication that is legally prescribed to them, or people obtain medication that was not prescribed for them, either by stealing from people who have the meds legally, or by buying those meds from the street. There’s a huge street trade in prescription drugs, most of which are opioid painkillers.

Most controlled prescription drugs will cause tolerance and addiction if taken without the guidance of a physician. Many of these drugs will produce a powerful, painful withdrawal syndrome.

A rehab center needs to be able to treat prescription drug addiction, paying attention to the damage these drugs cause to the mind and body when abused. First, a rehab center must have an onsite inpatient detoxification unit, where doctors and medical staff are available all day, every day. Prescription drugs can cause a wide variety of effects during detox, many of which can be potentially dangerous. Trained medical staff can provide medication that will safeguard the client’s health during this difficult time.

After detox is complete, inpatient residential care needs to be on offer. It’s a great way to remove one’s self from the environment in which pressure, stress and addiction have become second nature. A residential care center allows a person to focus on recovery 24/7.

Each rehab center for prescription drug abuse and addiction will provide individual, group, and family therapy. Treatment must be individualized. An addiction specialist will spend time with a client and together they create the client’s individualized treatment plan, with goals and objectives completely unique to that client becoming part of therapy.

Prescription Drug Rehab also includes ongoing support in the form of continuing individual therapy, doctor’s appointments, and support group meetings. Having a support system of people who know exactly what the newly clean patient is going through is a huge benefit.

Finally, all treatment professionals at a rehab center must be licensed, with the appropriate education, degrees and experience to allow them to leverage that training into action for the client.
